If you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time you will know that I have a wonderful relationship with my treadmill.
We have a mutual respect for each other and honestly, I can’t live without it. The main reason for getting a treadmill was because of my kids. My husband travels for work and kids are SO unpredictable. Illnesses, snow days, teacher work days you name it, so to have a treadmill in the house has been nothing short of life changing for me. Do I prefer to run outside? Of course, who wouldn’t? But there is a sense of security knowing that I can get it done if I need to and don’t have to stress about it. I didn’t always love the treadmill. I thought of it as the “dreadmill” as most people do, but after being forced to run on one because of the polar vortex a few years ago I learned to love it. I figured out ways to distract myself and realized the benefits of running on a treadmill!
Since I love the treadmill so much, I was super excited when I was sent the book “The Ultimate Treadmill Workout” by David Siik.
David is the creator of Precision Running for Equinox© which has become a cutting edge leader in treadmill classes. He is the cream of the crop and has trained elite athletes and hollywood stars and has become one of the best trainers in the fitness business.
He is THE treadmill expert.
Despite running on my treadmill ALL of the time, it does get redundant to just run long runs on the treadmill. I love to do speed work and tempo runs so I have some more control over my speed. Now that I’m kind of in limbo on my training and no goal written in stone, I am definitely struggling with my treadmill runs and looking for ways to make them more exciting. I have been doing Hollie’s workout and using The Ultimate Treadmill Workout book.
This book is great for all runners of all abilities including marathon runners, runners coming back from injury or those who want to lose weight. This is a new running program from David that focuses on a technique referred to as BITE. The mail goal is : RUN SMART, HURT LESS, BURN MORE. The book uses unique cycles of sprinting and endurance intervals similar to a HIIT workout.
The book is broken down into two parts: Mastering the Treadmill and The Treadmill Workout.
Part One is focused on teaching about his BITE method, treadmill basics, learning about incline, speed, duration, recovery, and form. It’s a comprehensive look at the key elements of running on a treadmill.
What made me love this book from the get go was the very first paragraph of the book:
“I’m going to tell you one of the greatest secrets in fitness–nothing, and I mean nothing, is ever going to replace the run. It is the most natural, effective, and guaranteed way to change your body and your life. You can spend the rest of your days avoiding this reality. You can empty your wallett every day seeking out the newest trend, the shortcut, or the inflated promise of results without work. Or, you can look youself in the mirror, take a deep breath, and consider putting the word work back in your workout.”
To all of the runners out there this makes complete sense, to those that don’t run? Yea, probably not so much, lol.
The BITE method is one “that produces the best results for the least amount of time, with the least amount of impact on the body.” David believes that it doesn’t matter where you run, what technology you use it is the content and design of your run that matters most.
BITE METHOD:Balanced Interval Training Experience
This workout is supposed to find a middle ground between sprinting and distance training and uses 4 key elements in a new way.
“BITE replaces the mindless miles with engaging intervals.”
Yes, this may sound like a traditional HIIT workout, but it’s far from it. The method introduces specific guidelines and principles that are designed ONLY for the treadmill. One of the key approaches is recovery and therfore reduces the excessive wear and tear on the body.
The second half of the book is the nitty gritty, the workouts. It comes with a 3 week kick-start program and helps to build a base where you are running only 3 days per week. The 3 week program is to help build your base for the Six-Week Running Revolution. You will also run only 3 days a week with this plan as well.
Overall thoughts of this book?
I LOVED it.
Just because I love the treadmill doesn’t mean I don’t get bored and need something to light a fire under my butt when I’m in a rut.
These workouts were awesome and definitely challenging. While I haven’t finished an entire program from start to finish, I have been incorporating them in my regular routine and totally loving them.
If you are looking for a way to bust out of a running rut or to just challenge yourself to get faster, then this book is definitely for you!The Ultimate Treadmill Workout: Book Review.... Bring it @DavidSiik via @suzy399 @adamsmedia #motherrrunner… Click To Tweet
