It’s that time of year. Yep, the season where EVERYONE is sick. Uggh, I dread this time of year. I’m a Pediatric Intensive care nurse and see terrible complications of respiratory viruses on a daily basis and it is no joke. If you have kids then you pretty much live in a petri dish. At times it can be a futile effort to stay healthy in the middle of winter when you are locked in the house with them for days on end in the middle of a snowstorm. Hello SNOWZILLA (BTW we are going on our SIXTH snow day).
I can’t tell you how many times a day I say:
“cover your mouth”
“stop picking your nose”
“wash your hands”
“get your fingers out of your mouth”
“get your hands away from your butt”
“stop touching your penis”
Ahhh, the joys of having boys.
I feel like I”m beating my head against a wall sometimes.
But it’s not just kids, adults around us are just as guilty of coughing without covering their mouths or not washing their hands. So how can we protect ourselves at this time of year? Well, I came up with a list of MY top 5 tips for boosting your immunity!
Hand washing is probably the number one preventative measure you can take to prevent getting sick. Make sure you use soap and water and scrub vigorously for 15-20 seconds. I have my kids sing the alphabet song to help them keep track of how long they are washing! If you are out and about, make sure you have a small bottle of hand sanitizer for those times where you don’t have soap and water. And use those Lysol wipes to wipe off your grocery carts! They are there for a reason!
There are probably many that would disagree with this one, but I’m a huge proponent of the flu shot. Like I mentioned before, I’ve seen a ton of kids in the hospital with the flu and had they received the flu shot, they may not have needed to be in the hospital. While it’s not a guarantee to keep you healthy, it can be very beneficial.
Studies have shown that the more tired you are on a regular basis the more susceptible to catching viruses you are! Lack of sleep can decrease the function of your immune system. Get at least 7-8 hours of good sleep a night. I know, I know, easier said than done coming from the lady who is up 3-4 times a night with a kid that doesn’t sleep.
Exercise & Nutrition
Exercise helps to boost your immune system and eating a lot of antioxidant rich foods especially veggies can help fight off illness. Go for broccoli, cabbage and kale for a super boost! Aim to exercise for at least 30-45 min 4 times per week!
Immune boosting supplements
There are so many immune boosting supplements out there that are amazing. I have a few favorites that I can NOT live without. I always have elderberry syrup and zinc in my medicine cabinet.
Elderberry is an herb that has been used for hundreds of years and has been shown to help in alleviating allergies and boosting respiratory health. I have even made my own elderberry syrup because it is so expensive to buy it at the store and much more cost effective to make your own. You can take it on a daily basis as a preventative measure to boost that immune system!
Zinc has also been shown to be an incredible immune booster as well, so when you combine the two it’s a win-win. I’ve started using NOW Foods Zinc and Elderberry lozenges . I take these on a daily basis and take more than one if there is a direct threat in my house (which is pretty much every day).
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that are great for the immune system. They are known to help with gut health and help to regulate the good and bad bacteria. Good gut health means good overall health!! I have been taking probiotics for a while now, specifically by drinking kombucha, and taking NOW Foods Probiotics. When choosing a probiotic there are many things to look for. You don’t want to just grab any probiotic off of the shelf. You want a probiotic that contains Lactobacillus acidophilus which is the most important strain to help maintain gut health.
