I seriously can’t believe we are 10 weeks into training already. It really has flown by and I was given a friendly reminder that there are only 42 days left until race day. And those next 42 days are going to be BUSY. I’ve got the Navy/AF half marathon coming up this weekend and I’m super excited to be running as a race Ambassador. I’ve even been asked to wear a GoPro for the entire race, so that should be interesting….. Fun? Scary? Not sure…guess I better watch what I say huh? I don’t think that will be a problem however because my Coach told me he wants me to race it, so I don’t think there will be much talking going on. Not quite sure I can pull off my PR of 1:50, but I’m sure as heck going to try. After the half I have Ragnar DC coming up the first weekend in October, followed by the Army 10 Miler the next weekend! Yikes! The time is going to fly by!!
I had a unique week of workouts this week. Imagine my surprise when I discovered I didn’t have a long run this week? I told you this plan was SO incredibly different than anything I’ve ever done before. Coach calls it “forced adaptation” and says it’s better in terms of improving endurance than one straight 20 mile run! Ummm…ok? I guess….But I’m trusting the process and I trust HIM most importantly so I’m going with the flow. And to be honest, I’m kind of liking it!
Ok, before we get to the workouts…don’t forget, today is the first day of the #BOSUStrong challenge!! If you missed all of the details, check them out HERE. Remember you DON’T need to have a Bosu to participate!! I won’t be posting daily on the blog about this, but I will post daily on Instagram, so make sure you head over there to find the daily prompts!
So anyway… here’s how the week went down.
On the Plan: 120 minutes in 1st gear
What actually happened: We had a crazy busy day in the morning and I lost track of time and saved my workout to the end of the day. When I finally decided to do it I realized I didn’t have enough time to do a 2 hr run because I had to take the MIL to the airport.
10 miles in 92 minutes (9:16 pace)
Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to meeeeeee, happy birthday to me. I did have a fun little party…stay tuned for the recap on that next week!
I turned 39 and I may have opened this bottle of Prosecco at noon…but I wasn’t alone so it was ok. It was 5 o’clock somewhere!
I’m not sure what to think about this birthday except for the fact that it’s freaking me out that I only have a year til 40. But….on the same note, that means next year I get an extra 5 minutes to qualify for Boston! Score! So maybe it’s not such a bad thing!
On the plan: 10 min @ 1st, 1 min @ 3rd/60 sec rest, 2 min @ 3rd/60 sec rest, 3 min @ 3rd/60 sec rest, 2 min @ 3rd/60 sec rest, 11 min @ 1st.
Remember 1st, 2nd, 3rd are “gears” meaning breathing patterns.
1st =In 2: Out 2 Gear 1 is my easy/comfortable pace.
2nd = In 2: Out 1 Gear 2 is my pushing it but not dying pace.
3rd = In 1: Out 2 Gear 3 is my OMG this sucks when will this end pace.
4th = In 1: Out 1 Gear 4 is a sprinting pace I could hold for 400m and then want to puke.
What actually happened:
My first 10 minutes was an easy 9:31 pace. My 3rd gear pace was 7:30. And my last 11 minutes were an 8:57 pace. The 7:30 pace was hard, no doubt, but it actually felt pretty good which I was surprised by.
3.6 miles in 32 min (8:53)
This was a great day. Want to know why? Because it was Mini #2’s open house for SCHOOL!!! For some reason he goes back really late this year, so it’s been a LONG summer with this little guy. We met his teachers and some new classmates! Not gonna lie….I was jumping up and down inside. I mean I love my kids, but I need a freaking break.
On the plan: 90 min @ 1st
What actually happened:
10 miles in 90 min (9:00 pace)
Because this was the last free day before school started we decided to go to the zoo with a friend of mine and a classmate of Mini #2. I hadn’t been to the zoo in so long and the mini really wanted to see the Pandas. If you hadn’t heard, one of the Pandas had two babies! Sadly one of them passed away, but the other one is doing well so far.
It’s pretty cool that the orangutans can climb over the walkway above the crowds….until they poop. Yep, that happened. Thank goodness no one was underneath!
On the plan: 3 Miles @ 2nd gear, 9 min @ 1st, 3 Miles @ 2nd gear. I saw this and I was like…Say Whaaatt??! Who the hell does 3 mile repeats?? For real. WHO.DOES.THAT??
What actually happened:
I think that may have been one of the hardest workouts I’ve ever done!
7 mi in 58:30 (avg pace 8:20)
On the plan: 60 min @ 1st gear
What actually happened: Believe it or not I had the opportunity to run outside in some AMAZING fall like weather and I had no motivation. None, zip, zero, zilch. I put it off until the very last second and eventually made it out, and I am so glad that I did. The weather was beautiful except a bit windy. My legs were tired from yesterdays 3 mile repeats so I planned on taking it super easy. It must have been the cool brisk air because this run really felt effortless. I didn’t look at my watch the entire time and was SHOCKED to see this upon my arrival home…
Shocked to see a sub-9 pace for sure, but even more shocked to know that it felt EASY. This plan really IS working!
Oh and by the way, if you are ogling over my Timex Ironman One GPS+ watch….you should be. This thing is awesome. I’ll have my FULL review coming up on Thursday and you do NOT want to miss it because I may or may not be giving one away. Yea, you heard me right. One of you will win one of these!!
