Most of us know it’s important as a runner to have good core strength. Our core strength is so important because it helps our posture, muscle power and flexibility. Your core is responsible for holding your pelvis, hips, and lower back and helping them all work together and helps with stability and balance. Obviously core conditioning can help prevent a wide array of injuries. I’ve experienced so many issues due to my weak core. I have chronic low back pain and my hips are ALWAYS misaligned. Thank goodness for an AWESOME chiropractor!
Ok, so this isn’t new info for most of us obviously.
Core work for ME is a downfall. It’s always the first thing to be left off of my workout if I’m short on time. And for those of us that are moms? We have to work especially hard on our core strength. It’s been almost 4 years since I had Mini #2 and I STILL haven’t gotten my core back to where it was. Occupational hazard I guess.
Anyway, with my new coach, he has me doing core work 3-4 times a week and it doesn’t take long at all, so there is really no excuse. So I thought I would share my routine. It’s actually super simple, nothing earth shattering by any means. So here it is, my 10 Minute Core Workout for Runners!
*Please note, I am not a personal trainer nor do I play one on television. These are core moves that I do as part of my training plan. I am still a work in progress so my form may not be perfect. Please consult with a trainer, or coach for further guidance.*
I put together some photos of examples of all of the exercises. I did add in some variations that you can work towards as you get stronger.
So there it is, the workout I do 3-4 times per week. There are a ton of other great core exercises out there as well, so this list is obviously not exhaustive, just an example of what I do and what is working for me right now.
