Hey everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend with your family and friends! I’m linking up a day late with Tara from Running N Reading because I really didn’t feel right tagging onto the end of my post about Memorial Day. I felt like it needed a post of it’s own. So, here I am! It was another crazy busy week. My strength training didn’t go down as I had hoped. I’ve gotten so behind on errands and things around the house that I’ve had to sacrifice in some areas. One being the time spent at the gym and the other blogging. I just couldn’t find the time! So here is a rundown of how last week went down!
Monday: Rest day
Tuesday: 60 min vinyasa flow yoga
Wednesday: This was Mini #2’s last day of school for the year…..seriously, I remember being so excited when school got out for the summer, but my parents must have been panicking like I am right now…
I dropped him off at school and decided to come home and go for a run. I’ve been thinking about using the Run Less Run Faster training plan for MCM again in the fall and I needed a recent 5K, so that’s what I did. I wanted to run it as fast as I could, and I think I achieved that. The weather was PERFECT, sunny, breezy and in the low 60’s, gorgeous running weather.
Missed my 5K PR by 5 seconds! And I’m pretty sure these Adidas Ultra Boosts got me there. I felt like I was flying, and it felt so easy. I’m definitely sticking with these for my short runs and speedwork. I won’t give up my Asics Gel Nimbus though for my long runs!!
That night there was a run in Old Town Alexandria for my MRTT group, so after the kids went to bed, I went out to meet up with them for another 4 miles! The bad part about that run was that I’m pretty sure I ate a million gnats and got a few in my eyes as well, it wasn’t fun at all. Lesson learned to not run by the Potomac River at dusk.
Thursday: 60 minutes vinyasa flow yoga
Friday: 5 miles @ 9:15 pace. Another MRTT run at zero dark thirty. Although zero dark thirty isn’t so dark anymore! I’m loving that I don’t need all of my night gear and lights to run early anymore!! And so incredibly happy to have my BRF back!! She is bouncing back so amazingly well after baby 3 1/2 months ago!!
Saturday: Rest day. I’ve been wanting to take the boys strawberry picking, as strawberries are in prime time season right now! So we took a drive out to Shlagel Farms in Waldorf, MD and got our berry picking on!
We picked 15 pounds of berries.
Yes, I said 15. I couldn’t wait to get home and bake, cook, eat, you name it!! I had promised the boys their FIRST Strawberry Shortcake for dessert that night, so when we got home I cleaned , hulled….BTW, BEST.TOOL.EVER….if you have never seen one, let me introduce you to the Strawberry Huller <—affiliate link!
I froze a ton to use for smoothies and then got to baking…the boys had to help of course!
First up, Strawberry Banana Bread…it was AMAZING (and I don’t like bananas)
Next, Strawberry Shortcake….
The boys said “this is the BEST thing I’ve EVER had!” They were so excited.
And then I tried a yummy PB2 Protein mug cake and since I had left over strawberries and whipped cream from the Strawberry shortcake….
This was actually really yummy. If you want a fairly low-cal dessert to get rid of that sweet craving without all of the guilt, I would definitely try it. I made this into 2 servings and each serving had 175 calories and 11 grams of protein! Of course the texture wasn’t like REAL cake but Mr. Cupcake even liked it! Score!
And then this happened…A Nutella Strawberry Tart….no words….make it….NOW.
I’m actually thinking about going back to pick more to make strawberry jam. My boys eat PB&J pretty much every day so we go through jelly/jam like it’s going out of style. At least this way I’ll know exactly what is going into it!
Sunday: Alexandria Running Festival Half Marathon
This race had been off my radar completely. It was actually a race I registered for last year but ended up deferring because I was injured. In fact I didn’t really even want to run it but because it literally ran through my neighborhood and my boys could walk out the front door to cheer me on, I decided to do it. It was my 10th Half Marathon!! I’m not going to go into a huge amount of detail though, I’ll save that for my recap later this week.
Sunday: Memorial day
This year we thought the boys were old enough to really teach them about the meaning of Memorial Day. We decided to take them to Arlington National Cemetary and pay our respects to those who have fallen fighting for our country.
I wanted a way for the experience to be really concrete for the boys. We stopped and bought a bouquet of flowers for them to lay on some of the grave sites. Of course Mini #1 has more of a concept than #2 because of his age, but it was still something that they could do to help them wrap their minds about why we were there.
It was a really cool experience and both boys did amazingly well and showed respect way beyond their years. Some great #strawberry recipes, speedy runs and a way of honoring the fallen with your kids @suzy399 Click To Tweet
