Hey everyone! Hope everyone is doing well and that you got the chance to check out my favorite fueling options from last week! It’s been another pretty boring week on the running front, sadly. I’ve decided to start tapering early. This hip thing has been really annoying. I really haven’t gone into much detail about it, so I’ll fill you in.
About a month ago after my 16 mile run I noticed a lot of hip stiffness in my left leg. It felt like a sore muscle, and I really just blew it off thinking that it was just tight from the run and that it would go away in a few days. I continued with my mid-week runs and it was still really sore. Next long run was 18 miles the next week (Clarendon Day Double) and I was still feeling it but was able to run despite it. After that was over and I still had the discomfort a few days later (now going on 2 weeks), I started panicking a little bit. I’ve had hip bursitis before, but it didn’t quite feel the same so I was still unsure what the issue was. I went to the chiropractor and mentioned it to him. And despite seeing him several time during this 2 week period I never mentioned it because I really just thought it might be normal soreness from picking up the pace a bit on my long runs. Luckily he confirmed that it wasn’t bursitis, but was a tight TFL. Here is a great diagram:
Anyway, I’m STILL dealing with it. I’ve been doing a lot of stretching and rolling, but I did learn a few things about rolling your IT band. It was a great article that you should check out. You can read the full article HERE. So, I’ve decided to start my taper early. I took the entire week off from running. So here is the rundown of what happened this week…..
Monday: Full Rest
Tuesday: So, apparently I can run 20 miles and be ok, but the second I bend over to pick up a toy….I throw out my low back. Yep, that happened. Couldn’t even stand up. And of course I couldn’t rest because I had both boys that NEVER.STOP.MOVING. My hubby came home from work early so I could lie down and actually rest and ice.
Wednesday: I went to the chiropractor for some TLC on my lower back. I walked out of there feeling 10x’s worse unfortunately. Luckily later in the day things calmed down a little bit and I was able to do some foam rolling, clam shells, leg lifts for my hips. I took a good hot epsom salt bath also which helped tremendously.
Thursday: I woke up feeling like a new woman! My back felt so much better and I actually had my range of motion back! I felt good enought to do Piyo Upper/lower body. It was great to get some good dynamic stretching in!
Friday: Full rest….again. *sigh*, I’m starting to get antsy. So I spent a good part of the day in the kitchen, because if you can’t exercise, you might as well eat, right?! Probably not the best attitude, but it works and keeps me busy, because I clearly don’t have enough to do with the boys….
And then this happened….
My friend and MRTT partner in crime gave me this awesome “sippy cup” for my birthday and I finally got the chance to use it. She knew how sad I was when my “Mommy’s sippy cup” wine glass broke, so it was so sweet of her to replace it! I love it!
And then this……
Yep, I’ve been collecting my race tshirts and I originally had the plan to make a quilt myself with them, but let’s get serious. I don’t have time for that. So, Project Repat offered me a discount to try out their quilts, so that’s what I spent my Friday night doing! Cutting ALL of my race shirts! So excited to see the finished product! I sent them off in the mail, so I should have it by Christmas!
Saturday: It was a rainy, gloomy day and I wanted to go for a run soooooo bad, but the rainy day laziness took over my body and I didn’t go. But, I did do Piyo Sweat! And of course I did some MORE baking….this awesome Chocolate Zucchini Bread! But alas when I had mixed everything but the flour, I realized I was OUT of flour!! So I got a little creative….I substituted Chocolate PB2!! Yep, eliminated the flour and used the same amount of PB2. And I may have added a few scoops of Skoop B Strong (affiliate link). It came out AMAZING….
Sunday: My first Army 10 Miler and off to work night shift! Full race recap to come!
