Hey everyone, I kind of feel like I’ve been a bit absent lately and I apologize. It seems like along with losing my running and workout mojo I’ve lost the blogging mojo too. I’m hoping to get it all back by the end of this week with a successful run. I get to run on Thursday, so keep your fingers crossed that it is pain free!! In the mean time, it’s Wednesday, so time for the Wondermom Wednesday linkup again with A Mom Who Tris and Mom Swim Bike Run!
Please join us! But please make sure you play by the rules! Please make sure you link back to your hosts if you want to link up! You can grab a badge in the Wonder Mom Wednesday tab at the top of my page!!
For todays topic we are talking about how you involve your kids in exercise!!
This one is a no-brainer for me. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, your kids are extensions of you. If exercise is important to you and your family, it will be important to them! The only way to ensure that is to get out there as a family and stay active. Not really rocket science if you ask me.
I’ve compiled a list of 5 things that YOU can do to get your kids exercising and moving on a regular basis!
#1 LEAD BY EXAMPLE: nuf’ said. (Which probably isn’t an issue for most of my readers?)
#2 GET INVOLVED— get outside with them and play. A few days ago, I went with the little guy and taught him how to do “monsters”. Remember them from high school sports?? We had a blast!
You don’t necessarily have to play an organized sport or run long distance, but get outside and play with them. I read a blog several months back, and I’m kicking myself now for not saving it, because I can’t reference it and give you the link…BUT, this woman challenged moms and dads out there to put down their phones and go outside and play a game of tag with your kids. Good old fashioned tag. I realized that I didn’t do that with my kiddos that often, actually EVER. Yes, I let them exercise next to me when I’m doing a video or the like, but I’ve never gone out and just played a kid game with them. It was one of the most freeing experiences that I’ve had as a parent. I hadn’t had that much fun in a long time. Try it.
#3 LIMIT TV/VIDEO GAME TIME: Yep, I’m guilty. I told myself I would never let my kid watch too much tv. Sometimes I need to get stuff done and the TV goes on to help me accomplish that. I won’t lie and say that it doesn’t and it probably happens more often than I would like to admit sometimes. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids get no more than 1-2 hours of “screen” time per day. That includes TV, computer, ipad, leap pad, etc. I found this awesome pin the other day that I can’t wait to do for my 5 year old to help us limit the screen time.
#4 USE EXERCISE AS A REWARD: Don’t make exercise a punishment. Ok, seems like common sense, I mean if my kid doesn’t clean up his room I don’t tell him to drop and give me 20 pushups….although….that IS a good idea 😉
#5 MAKE IT PART OF THEIR SCHEUDLE: Designate a specific day to go out for a bike ride together. Say, every Saturday after mommy gets back from her long run, LOL.
Or you could just be like me and get really obsessed about something and brainwash the kids into thinking that there is nothing better in the world than working out or running. That works too
Come back for next week’s linkup!
