It’s no secret to most of my friends and family that I’m
easy going a stress ball. Not sure why, but my whole life I’ve been prone to get stressed. I’m pretty sure it runs in my family. Both of my grandmothers were worriers. My mom is kind of a worrier, and my dad…well, he’s just Zen and nothing like me on this front. I wish I could tell you why I stress over little things, but alas I cannot. It is just part of who I am. I hate that I stress so much and it can really be a downfall sometimes most of the time.
I sat down and tried to think of all of the stressors in my life. To be honest, I’m lucky, there aren’t that many. We are very blessed to have what we have and sometimes I feel guilty about being stressed. Hmmm, guilt and stress, a wonderful pair aren’t they? My major stressor right now? Being a parent to two boys under the age of 6. I’m not complaining by any means. I love those boys more than anything in the world, but they are TOUGH. Anyone with kids knows it is tough. And staying home with them all week is even tougher. It’s a constant battle of don’t do that, stop hitting, stop kicking, tripping over toys, cleaning up messes, changing blow out diapers (hopefully to end soon) and the list goes on and on. Yes, it stresses me out. Sometimes I feel like this is the best coping mechanism…
No doubt. Ya’ll know that’s why I run…..and drink wine…wait, I gave that up for the 21 day reset I’m doing right now…..no wonder I’m stressed But my fear is showing my kids my stress. I know they see it, and it feels like they feed off of it. But I don’t want them to remember me when they are adults as the mom that yelled all of the time. I know it’s the age…my husband refers to it as the “battle years”, but I’m still very aware of how I come off to them.
I am lucky that I only have day to day things to stress about. I work in a pediatric intensive care unit and see critically ill and dying children all of the time. That definitely helps to keep perspective, but when it comes down to it, we all get wrapped up in our daily lives and lose perspective again and start stressing over the little things that get to us in life. It’s a vicious cycle.
Managing stress in a healthy way is critical. Yea, I may have a glass of wine in the late afternoon to calm my nerves a bit after a long day of the boys fighting or breaking things or what not. Is that the most productive way to relieve stress? Probably not, but it works.
Did you know….
I can say with confidence that I have experienced several of these!! The main one for me are headaches and muscle tension or pain, anxiety, lack of motivation, irritability (Mr. Cupcake can attest to that), and overeating. I’ve mentioned several times in posts on my blog about a neck strain that is recurring….yep…the flare ups are from stress.
So…..what do I like to do to relieve stress?
#1 RUN–this has been tough lately with the injuries I’ve been dealing with, this could be contributing to my increased stress level lately.
#2 Hot epsom salt bath with a glass of wine–If I had the time, I would do this every single night.
#3 Shavasana–seriously, if they could just do a one hour yoga class in this pose I would be a happy woman
#4 Eat–this is probably the only non-healthy way to cope…not good. This summer I think I put on 8 pounds because when the boys stressed me out, I ate…and what do I go for when I’m stressed? SUGAR. ALL OF THE SUGAR.
I’ve been doing the 21 day Reset with Mommy Run Fast, and I’m currently on day 3 of no sugar, wheat, or processed foods. The processed foods isn’t really a stretch for me with the exception of a protein bar here and there, but the lack of sugar and wheat has definitely been a challenge. We’ll see how it goes!
